Can I appeal against Companies House late filing penalty?

Companies House will consider your appeal only if your circumstance was of exceptional. If your reasons for failing to file your company accounts on time were one of the following, then your appeal is considered not exceptional.

  • You are unable to pay the penalty
  • Your accountants failed to file the accounts on time for you
  • Your accountants were sick
  • You are not familiar with the filing requirements
  • Your first time failing to file accounts on time
  • Your company is bankrupt
  • Your accounts were lost in the post
  • Your company directors were travelling and unable to sign the accounts
  • Your company is not trading
  • Your company is dormant

It is a good idea to discuss your company filing requirements with an accountant to avoid expensive late filing penalty in the future.

Concise accountancy offers dormant company accounts and filing services. Our accountants will prepare your dormant accounts and file the accounts with Companies House for you.

I provide IT consultancy services to UK businesses and I have no knowledge whatsoever about doing accounting books. I was very keen to learn to do it myself. I spent hours reading bookkeeping reference books, learning double entry and I was very proud that I understand the basic accounting so I did my books.

When the time to do my company year end accounts, I discovered that I have been recording information incorrectly and that I have to reorganise everything. my former accountants charged me a fortune to fix my incorrect records.

My advice to all is that it is worth to talk to people who know about these things to avoid disappointment and unnecessary work in a year’s time.

Time is expensive and sometime it is worth spend a little for a big gain in your business.
